The Tale of the Dragon in the Sand

It was once said, in the deserts of the Arab world, that beneath the dunes and sands there was a treasure for the pure. It was not like any other treasure, it was golden and with precious stones, but it burned the hands of those who would try to take it for them-selves.

One day, as Nour and the Wolf were lost in the middle of the Sahara and they had been walking for days without direction. Suddenly,  they saw something shining in the distance. It was a mirage, they thought at first, caused by the heat and lack of water. But the more the two got closer to the shiny spot the bigger it seemed to get. It was a lake of golden treasures, just laying a few inches beneath the surface of the desert.

The Merchant understood quickly what that was and warned the wolf not to touch any of it, or else she will burn. The two then started walking in the opposite direction, trying to fight the temptation to take the golden treasures with them. Suddenly, as soon as they had walked a few steps away from the lake of gold, something moved beneath the ground. A giant dragon covered in sand rose from dunes, holding some of the hidden treasure on the crests of his back. A loud voice echoed in the distance, “this treasure is for those who don’t follow their temptations, but a rigorous moral compass even when lost in the desert”, the voice claimed, ” I see your souls are pure  and therefore I offer you this treasure. The future I see and you will use the gold to do good along your journey.”

The giant dragon laid the treasure next to the wolf and the Merchant in a cloud of sand moved by the wind. When the desert was again at piece, Nour and the Merchant put the gold gifted to them in their bags and carried on towards the horizon. Each gram of gold was then used to map the sky, so as to help those lost in the desert at night without a compass.
